Here is where Nelson Mandela lived in Solitary Confinement for 18 years (he spend 9 years in other prisons). He was a political prisoner. Because he was considered "dangerous," or the leader of a political movement, he wasn't allowed to live in a communal cell.
The cell is 2x2 meters wide.
The prisoners were given a small mat to sleep on and three blankets.. one to be used as extra padding, one to be used as a pillow, and one to be used as a blanket. This was all they were given, even in winter. Cape Town winters are very windy and rainy, and the cell window was left open (besides the bars). What was worse was the the black prisoners were allowed only to wear shorts, t-shirts and go shoeless the whole year round (while Asians and Coloureds were allowed long sleeves, pants and shoes).
Here is an example of a communal cell. The prison guards put intercoms in the cells in order to hear if the prisoners were talking about politics. If they were, the prisoners were punished.
